Happy Bailpola!

Today we went to Khadkat to celebrate Pola, a bull-worshipping festival.  It is the one and only day of the year farmers rest from working in the fields and tending to their livestock – there is different work to be done: adorning bulls and cows with painted designs, bells, beads, and beautiful, colorful tassels. We helped to make straw necklaces and straw paintbrushes with sticks and straw and twine, and were soon finding our inner Picasso, painting and decorating the cattle with pink, blue and purple. The farmers then brought bulls (below) to the temple for worship, and after that we celebrated a ‘marriage’ between two bulls and two cows – we even threw rice in the air towards the animals after the prayer was said!
